Music in Action: Reneé Fleming Voice Clinic
Have you ever wondered what advice one of the most celebrated voices of our time would give to aspiring vocalists? On October 14, four UNC voice students get the rare chance to find out, working one-on-one with Renée Fleming in a public clinic at Moeser Auditorium.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch one of the greatest voices of our time teach in real time, the kind of moment that usually happens behind closed doors. Fleming has sung “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl, earned the National Medal of Arts from President Obama, and picked up her fifth Grammy in 2023. Now she’s bringing that same artistry into direct conversation with the next generation of singers, right here on campus.
It’s part of what Carolina Performing Arts does best: opening the door between world-class artists and our community, on stage and off.

Dance Uncovered: Sankai Juku
What does a dance form that emerged amid the political protest and rapid social transformation of postwar Japan have to say to us now?
The evening before Sankai Juku takes the stage, Christopher Nelson, professor of anthropology at UNC-Chapel Hill, welcomes William Marotti, a UCLA professor of history and butoh specialist, to his Anthropology 330 class. Marotti has studied the form alongside the critical art and popular movements of that era.
At UCLA, Marotti teaches modern Japanese history with a focus on everyday life and cultural-historical questions, and chairs the East Asian Studies M.A. Interdepartmental Degree Program. Nelson has opened this lecture to the public, so you can sit in on a real class and watch the performance the next night with fresh eyes.
